STARTING FROM THE GROUND UP
Six years ago, Sean Tebbe, and Robbie Speer had a chance encounter on a construction site in Blue Springs. Tebbe was in the wholesale grocery business at the time, helping start up a new Price Chopper. Speer was in the excavation business, helping clear land for the same supermarket. The two had known each other since elementary school. Needing a break from overwork on the supermarket project the pair flew off the Las Vegas for a spontaneous "five-day" trip. The glitz was still there after just three days, but their gambling money was gone. Sitting in the Horseshoe Casino for a final cup of coffee before flying home, the two discovered a mutual interest in being enterepreneurs.

Several days later, Speer called Tebbe to say that he had quit his day job and was ready to start the business they had fantasized about. The initial synergy at S&T came from Speer's virurosity with a backhoe combined with Tebbe's business savvy. The catalyist for growth was the same on the always has driven capitalism--both were tired of working so deathly hard to put money in someones else's bank account. They wanted to control their own destinies.

Their first job was clearing land for a Wal-Mart expansion in Raytown. Their office was in the Tebbe house where his wife Gina kept the books after her full time job. Nonetheless, both men have earned not only the respect but the near-reverence of their co-workers for strong work ethics.

Having started with little more than a collateralized house, and a vision, Speer and Tebbe built an enterprise expected to gross more than $30 million in 2003. Seven of S&T's eight companies deal in real estate or building, with activities that include residential and commercial construction, electrical, excavation, trenching, and servicce, hauling, landscaping and property management.
